A bath bomb looks like one thing and is really four, and the proportions between them are what separate a good one from a disappointing one.
The parts
Sodium bicarbonate and citric acid. The reaction. Dry, they are inert. In water, they fizz, and the fizz breaks the tablet apart and disperses everything else.
Oils and butters. This is the part that touches you. Ours carry coconut, avocado, grape seed, and sweet almond oils with shea butter. They are the reason your skin feels different after. Latika bath bombs are packed with nourishing oils; you will feel it when you soak.
An emulsifier. Unglamorous and important. It keeps the oils dispersed through the water instead of floating and then coating your tub.
Color and scent. The part everyone judges the product on, and the smallest part by weight. A tiny amount goes a long way with colorants. We test and mix our colors in-house, using cosmetic-grade and raw mineral or clay color ingredients. Latika bath bombs are also mess-free- which we can formulate into the recipe after testing and adjusting.
What fillers do
Fillers add bulk cheaply. Corn starch is the common one. A bomb that is substantially filler is larger, heavier, and cheaper to produce, and it carries less of everything that matters.
Latika bath bombs are made with only the necessary ingredients for quality, experience, and high performance. We do not add fillers to save cost, as one of our leading values is to never compromise the quality. You will find our bath bombs to have a fresh, beautiful fizz, a nourishing skin feel, and a clean rinse after. Fillers tend to make a bath bomb fizz in a messy, muddy way that is unpleasant and unsatisfying.
The tell is the ingredient order. Everything is listed by quantity, so if a starch appears above the oils, you know what the tablet is mostly made of.
Color, and why it is the interesting part
There are two approaches, and they behave completely differently.
Cosmetic mess-free color is engineered to disperse through water and rinse away. It allows deep, saturated color and a variety of bright hues without leaving a ring.
Mineral color tints the water more softly and rinses fully clean. It gives a more muted, natural-looking bath. There are fewer color shade options, and the colors are less bright.
Scent and the three types
Bath bombs scented with essential oils are aromatherapy: direct, simpler, and they fade faster. Natural fragrance blends are more complex than essential oils and are made with all-natural fragrance components such as essential oils, essences, solids, and more. Custom fragrance blends are layered and last longer. Our phthalate-free custom fragrances are used in a small amount in the product, and allow us to offer a wide variety of scents. All of ours are phthalate-free, across every product rather than a selected line.
One thing specific to bath bombs: scent load has to be proportioned to the format. A bath bomb is a large piece dissolving into a lot of water, so it needs less scent per gram than a shower steamer, which has to fill a whole room from a small tablet. Over-scenting a bath bomb is a common cause of skin irritation, because you are sitting in it. Our formula is balanced and designed to use smaller amounts that make the right impact. What we choose to leave out
Glitter, unless it is the biodegradable kind, because it does not dissolve and it ends up in the water system.
Dried botanicals, pretty as they are, because they end up around your drain and around you.
These are aesthetic choices that photograph well and behave badly in the clean-up phase. We do not oppose them, as some customers would love dry ingredients in their tub, but we would usually formulate without messy pieces. If you do use a bath bomb with physical additives, we recommend using a mesh bag over it or adding a mesh filter to your drain, then wiping your tub with a towel after you rinse it clean.
FAQ
Do bath bombs expire?
They weaken rather than spoil. Humidity starts the reaction slowly, so a bomb left unwrapped in a bathroom will fizz less. Keep them sealed and use within a year. Latika bath bombs are made in small batches in Texas, which means the bath bombs you buy in the store or from our website ship to you fresh, within a week to 3 weeks from production. they dont expire, since they are made of dry ingredients, but the fizz will weaken. Keep them dry, sealed, and use them sooner rather than later- we are here to make you more fresh bath bombs.
Why did mine barely fizz?
Either it had already reacted with humidity in storage, or it was not used within the one year recomended timeline. The oils are still there to nourish your bath, but the fizz may have been less than satisfying.
Is a bigger bath bomb better?
Only if the extra size is oils and scent rather than filler, which is exactly what is hard to see. A Latika bath bomb is offered in a 7.5 oz size and consists of the same oil-rich formula as our smaller ones. Bigger Latika bath bombs are designed for a longer fizz time, more fun-filled baths, and for larger bathtubs that are more common in newer home builds. Why is there an emulsifier in a natural product?
Latika bath bombs contain a plant-based emulsifier, critical for the positive experience after the bath is done- clean up. Since oils and water do not mix, without one, the oils sit on the surface and end up on your tub instead of on you. The emulsifier also helps carry the colorants in the water, which in turn makes clean up as easy as a quick rinse. It is doing a job, and the alternative is a less-than-pampering bath and clean up process.
