There is no best shower steamer. There is only the one that matches what you want the next ten minutes to feel like.
That sounds like a dodge, so here is the practical version. Nearly everyone picks by scent name and then wonders why the lavender one felt wrong on a Tuesday morning. Pick by time of day and by what you need first, and the scent takes care of itself.
Start with when you shower
If you shower in the morning, you want something that wakes the room up. If you shower at night, you want the opposite, and using the wrong one is the most common reason people conclude a steamer did nothing. It worked. It was pulling in the other direction.
If you shower at both ends of the day, keep two blends in the cupboard. They are seven dollars each at five to a pack and they last about two weeks.
For the morning
Energy Boost. Lemongrass and spearmint. Bright and cold-feeling, the closest thing to opening a window. This is the one to reach for on a slow start or a mid-afternoon slump.
Stress Relief. Grapefruit, mint and rosemary. Lifts without being sharp about it, which makes it the better choice if you find straight citrus too much before coffee.
For the evening
Calm. Lavender and cooling peppermint. Our most-reached-for blend, and the one most people mean when they say they want to wind down. The peppermint keeps it from being sleepy-sweet.
Self Care. Warm oats, honey and vanilla. Softer and more comforting than Calm, less herbal. If lavender is not your thing, this is where to go instead.
For the middle of the day
Relax and Focus. Lavender and peppermint, balanced so it settles you without slowing you down. This is the one for a shower between two halves of a day, or before something you need to be steady for.
When your head feels heavy
Breathe and Release. Eucalyptus and peppermint, and the most mentholated thing we make. It clears the head in the way stepping outside on a cold morning does.
To be clear about what this is: it is aromatherapy, not medicine. It is not treating anything. It just makes the air feel less closed in, and on a heavy-headed day that is worth having.
When you want scent rather than aromatherapy
Fine Fragrance. Built in layers the way a perfume is, so the scent is more composed and holds longer in the room than an essential oil blend does.
This is a different product doing a different job, not a downgrade. Essential oil blends are direct and they fade faster because that is what plant oils do. A fine fragrance blend is for when you want the bathroom to smell designed. Both are phthalate-free, as everything we make is.
For gifting
Steamers give well because they need no explanation and no bathtub. Our seasonal blends exist for exactly this, and a five-pack lands better than a single.
If you are buying for someone whose taste you do not know, Calm is the safest pick and Fine Fragrance is the most impressive one to open.
How many to buy
Most people use two or three a week, so a five-pack is roughly two weeks and a good way to find out whether you reach for it.
If you are buying two blends, take one morning and one evening rather than two you like the sound of. You will use both.
You can compare all of them on the shower steamers page.
Still not sure it is for you?
Fair. Steamers are a small product with a specific job, and they are not for everyone. We wrote an honest answer to whether shower steamers actually work, including what they cannot do, which is the better place to start if you are sceptical.
